haha see now that’s a polite question! I think I finally realised I was obsessed when I was in my late twenties and buying books about perfumery, and joining online communities for other perfume aficionados and spending what seemed like stupid amounts of money on fragrances. Though now I’m like, wow I used to be so moderate in my spending :P

I see what you mean. Cause I had a friend come out to me recently and I think the first thing I asked was “When did you know?” and then I read what you posted and I was like “WHY DID I ASK THAT!?”

because the truth is, you and I have so much more interesting things to talk about, things we have in common, stuff that gets us excited, things we hate, things that make us both laugh whatever. But as soon as someone asks that, it’s like “oh so when did you realise you and me are not the same?”. And it instantly puts this weirdness barrier between us. When what we were trying to do was establish common ground, to see if we’re people who could be friends and enjoy each other’s company, And tbh, when someone gets to be 40 years old and they haven’t worked out that not everyone in the world is the same and doesn’t have the imagination to figure out that everyone’s story about who they are is unique and different and feels the need to ask me personal questions about my sex life and personal experience of my sexuality I’m like really bitch? This is what you have to show for a lifetime? complete lack of empathy and comprehension? I can imagine that you as a woman, for instance have had a different experience of life to me, I don’t know the details, and will never be able to understand how different your life has been to mine (or possibly how not all that much different it has been) but I don’t need to say to you, “oh, so when you had your first period, how did that feel?” when I literally just met you and we were just having a general discussion about something else altogether…..

Would u say the question was inappropriate or incorrect? Cause some gay people I know say “I’ve known since I was 7” or something similar like that. Usually I think when they say that they fully grasped their sexuality and no longer felt confused.

I think it’s both. Yes many Gay people will be polite enough to talk to someone about this. But that doesn’t mean anyone has the right to ask that kind of question apropos of nothing. I mean if the conversation had been about sex or sexuality then sure I could have understood it. But even then, when does anyone ask a heterosexual person, when did they realise they were heterosexual? Like I’m not trying to be a dick about this. but I’m a grown ass man, this is a grown ass woman, why the fuck does she need to know this? Can;t she just accept that other people are different to her, and not need to know the details of someone else’s experience of being different to her? Like does she need me to explain to her that some people are different? She’s 40. If she was 15, I could maybe understand it, but even then most 15 year olds I’ve met seem to have basic knowledge of the fact that not everyone is alike and not everyone’s personal inner or sexual life is stuff they want to talk about with a perfect stranger when you’d just been talking about Mesopotamian history and not sexuality. Like I don’t walk up to you and ask you, when did you first realise you weren’t white? Because you know that would be fucking rude….right?

just got back from one of the fanciest birthday parties I’ve ever been to, a litte drunk. but some woman I was having a casual conversationabout history with suddenly and apropos of nothing said “when did you know?”. I was like what? when did I know I was interested in Çatalhöyük? and she was like “no, when did you know you were Gay.”…. I was so taken aback, like how is it OK for her to just straiht up ask something like that out of the blue?
